In a momentous ceremony held in Mangalbal on September 26, Justice Obaidul Hassan Sworn officially took the oath to become the 24th Chief Justice of the country. The oath was administered by President Md. Sahabuddin in the presence of government ministers, Appellate Division and High Court Division judges, and the distinguished retired former Chief Justice Hassan Faiz Siddiqui at Bangabhaban.
This appointment came after President Md. Sahabuddin’s announcement on September 12, designating Justice Obaidul Hassan as the 24th Chief Justice of the nation.

Justice Obaidul Hassan Sworn Hassan was born on January 11, 1959, into a respected Muslim family in Chaishashi (Hatnaya) village, Netrakona district. His father, Akhlakul Hossain Ahmed, played an instrumental role in the liberation war and contributed significantly to the drafting and signing of Bangladesh’s post-independence constitution as a member of the Constituent Assembly. Furthermore, his son, Anuj Sazzadul Hassan, is the current Member of Parliament for Netrakona-4 Constituency and a former Senior Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office.
Justice Obaidul Hassan Sworn’s wife, Nafisa Banu, currently serves as a Member (Finance) of the Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority Board of Directors. Their son, Barrister Ahmed Shafkat Hassan, holds an LL.M in International Law from the University of Durham.
Justice Obaidul Hassan Sworn embarked on his legal career by joining the District Bar Committee after completing his BSS (Hons), MSS (Economics), and LLB degrees from Dhaka University in 1986. He was subsequently enrolled as a lawyer in both the High Court Division and the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh. During his illustrious career, he served as an Assistant Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General for five years from 1996 to 2001. His dedication to the legal field earned him the position of an Additional Judge in the High Court Division on June 30, 2009, and he was later appointed as a Permanent Judge in the same division on June 6, 2011.
Justice Obaidul Hassan Sworn’s remarkable journey also includes his role as a member and later Chairman of the International Criminal Tribunal-II, where he presided over cases related to organized crimes against humanity during the War of Liberation. His tenure at the tribunal, which spanned from March 25, 2012, to September 15, 2015, saw the adjudication of 11 significant cases. Subsequently, on September 3, 2020, he was appointed as a judge in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.
Notably, Justice Obaidul Hassan Sworn is also a published author, having written two books titled ‘Pictures of Indescribable Cruelty: Intellectual Murders of the Seventies and Others’ and ‘Bangabandhu Bangladesh: Story of a War Child and Others.’
Before ascending to the bench, Justice Obaidul Hassan Sworn enjoyed a reputation as a distinguished litigator, handling civil, criminal, and constitutional matters with distinction. His contributions also extended to part-time teaching at Dhanmondi Law College.
